The service aims to:

VON Canada - Exercise and Falls Prevention Programs


Niagara, ON

Falls Prevention: A 12-week, group-based program to reduce the incidence of falls and falls related injuries. This program includes two sessions per week, running 45 min each. Included in each session is an active exercise component to increase strength and improve balance as well as an interactive educational piece on falls risk factors and solutions. Programs are taught by a Registered Kinesiologist.

Various locations in Grimsby, Port Colborne, St Catharines and Welland.

General Exercise Programs: Exercise classes are taught in a group setting, geared towards the senior population. Participants will work through chair-based and/or standing exercises targeting improvements in strength, flexibility and balance. Various equipment is used to achieve these goals including resistance bands, small hand weights and exercise balls. This program is suitable for all levels of fitness. Modifications to exercises are presented by the instructor for an inclusive and safe workout for all participants. Programs are taught by non-regulated health professionals such as a physiotherapy/ occupational therapy assistant or instructors certified in seniors fitness.

VON Canada - Parkinson's Exercise Program

An exercise program designed for anyone with the diagnosis of Parkinson's or any other neurological disorder. This program includes three types of therapeutic exercise: muscle strengthening, balance training, and flexibility exercises. Exercises are graduated, starting with the simplest and advancing as appropriate. Participants are taught how to monitor their heart rates, and are encouraged to reach a moderate intensity during exercise classes. As a direct result, endurance capabilities of participants improve, resulting in improved health, energy and strength. Programs are taught by non-regulated health professionals such as a physiotherapy/ occupational therapy assistant or instructors certified in seniors fitness.
