Group exercise and falls prevention classes for older adults and people with mobility issues. Aims to improve strength, flexibility and balance to prevent injury and falls. Falls Prevention classes (Keeping Balance) are lead by an Occupational Therapist and Lo-impact aerobic classes (Stay Fit) are led by Certified Fitness Instructor/Recreation Therapist. A group exercise program that helps older adults live active, healthy and independent lives. This program provides free group exercise programs delivered by certified personal trainers. Exercises are intended to support and improve activities of daily living.

The service aims to:

  • Improve and/or maintain strength
  • Prevent age-related muscle loss
  • Build balance to decrease risk of falls
  • Enhance confidence getting around
  • Support overall health by providing access to Health and Wellness Education and other resources that will help maintain long-term independence
Classes run for approximately 50 minutes and are available multiple times each week. Each class has elements of cardio, strength, balance and flexibility/mobility. Seated and standing exercise options are available.

VON Canada - Parkinson's Exercise Program


Niagara, ON

An exercise program designed for anyone with the diagnosis of Parkinson's or any other neurological disorder. This program includes three types of therapeutic exercise: muscle strengthening, balance training, and flexibility exercises. Exercises are graduated, starting with the simplest and advancing as appropriate. Participants are taught how to monitor their heart rates, and are encouraged to reach a moderate intensity during exercise classes. As a direct result, endurance capabilities of participants improve, resulting in improved health, energy and strength. Programs are taught by non-regulated health professionals such as a physiotherapy/ occupational therapy assistant or instructors certified in seniors fitness.

VON Canada - S.M.A.R.T Exercise Program


Niagara, ON

Group-based program to reduce the incidence of falls and falls related injuries. This program includes 1-3 sessions per week, running 45-60 min each. Included in each session is an active exercise component to increase strength and improve balance. Modifications to exercises are presented by the instructor for an inclusive and safe workout for all participants. Various locations in Fonthill, Fort Erie, Grimsby, Niagara Falls, Pelham, Port Colborne, Smithville, St Catharines, Vineland and Welland.
